| Civic Engagement Essay

Civic engagement revolves around the issue of representation of society or the public by an individual or a group of individuals collectively. The central role of civic engagement is so as to ensure that the society at large benefits in the long run. This is done from a social, political and economic perspective. Civic engagement seeks to enhance the skills of students outside their classrooms while they tackle the problems facing a particular society. This is done through carrying out inquiries to that effect. Civic engagement seeks to enhance equality, freedom and justice to all individuals in the society.

Over the years, there has been the rising tide of gender inequality all over the world. This is mainly because of individual perceptions about the role of women and men in the society. Traditional beliefs and practices have greatly contributed to the continued stereotype in regards to the issue. Female activists all over the world have been at the forefront in a bid to ensure that they are heard. This has caused the rise of many gender inequality awareness programs so as to ensure that this issue comes to an end.

Throughout her works, Gilman states that women have been completely undermined by the society as people who have no ability to think scientifically. All the things that they are involved in leaves them at the mercy of their husbands. As a result, they are demeaned in the society. She also notes that the traditional division of labor created by the society leaves the woman economically dependent on her husband. As a result, the woman is completely deprived of her freedom and autonomy. She compares the woman situation to the domesticated horse.

Rising of Gender Inequality in “The Gate to Women’s Country”

These sentiments are shared by Sheri Tepper in her novel “The Gate to Women’s Country.” The author uses her book to highlight the position of women in the society. Particularly, she is able to achieve this through the setting of the book which presents the women as being at the middle of civic engagement while their men live outside the community in preparation for war. In the novel, women are portrayed was individuals who are enthusiastic about rebuilding, rediscovering civilization. The intentions of these women in their quest for civic engagement revolve around Stavia, the council woman. The women in this society are willing to do anything that will improve the welfare of individuals in their society.

The civic engagement of women as portrayed by Sherri Tepper is extremely crucial as it helps them to remain united after the realization that the land and resources at their disposal is less that the required resources to support the entire society. This is an indication that these individuals are willing to do anything so as to ensure that they remain as one. The novel portrays positive civic engagement in practice.

The leadership that is enhanced by Stavia is an indication of justice, equality and freedom of individuals in the society. Everyone has a right to enjoy their democratic space from wherever that they wish. This is illustrated through the women who give up their sons to the camps where they are trained to be warriors. This is despite the fact that these boys are very young and their mothers would want to raise them by their side. Eventually, through the continued civic engagement of the entire society, they are able to remain united as they build their community. This is because each and every person assumes their responsibility as expected.
