Indigenous People of Australia sample essay
Indigenous people of Australia, also known as aboriginal Australians from as early as 1789, are defined as the original inhabitants of the Australian continent, as well as the surrounding islands. They were original migrants from Africa, and have been residing in what is known today as Australia for around 50,000 years. Currently, the aboriginal population suffers hardships concerning economy and society as a whole. There are many matters taken into account when examining the current situation of aboriginal people in Australia.
When England first colonized Australia in 1788, they brought along diseases such as measles, tuberculosis, and smallpox, which are estimated to have killed up to 90% of Darug, one of the aboriginal nations. Controversy immediately arose between the English settlers and indigenous Australians. Since the day the British flag was first raised at Sydney Cove, on January 26, 1788, the aboriginal people saw the European settlement as an invasion. European civilization spreading throughout Australia nearly sabotaged Aboriginal civilization.
Although the British government had no intention of creating tension between the settlers and aboriginal people, that soon deteriorated. The settlers did nevertheless take the land that Aboriginals were living off, and had no respect for the aboriginal culture. Europeans considered their civilization to be superior, and intended to lend a helping hand to the indigenous people. With a mutual misunderstanding of each other’s cultures and intentions, the aboriginals were pushed to the edge of European settlement and took up weapons to defend their land, which led to the settlers seeing them as savages who needed to be taught a lesson.
By the end of the 19th century, it was apparent that the European invasion had had negative impacts on the aboriginal people. The British government of Australia has had a very poor record when it comes to the treatment of its Aboriginal citizens. They were stripped of their land, abused, murdered, and criticized for their culture. From 1910 until 1970, between 10 and 30% of indigenous children were forced out of their family homes under state and federal child welfare and protection laws.
These years were known as the “Stolen Generations” and the government now recognizes that these years inflicted profound suffering on many indigenous families. Although since then, the government has formally apologized to the Indigenous Australian population, the aboriginals were affected so negatively it led to future issues within its population. In the 1971 consensus of employment for the aboriginal population shows that it is extremely low. Only 45. 6% of the adult population is being defined as part of the labor force, and only 2.
2% of the aboriginal people are self-employed. A study conducted in Melbourne found that the removed Aboriginal people were less likely to have completed a secondary education, three times as likely to have acquired a police record and twice as likely to use illicit drugs. One advantage that was on record for the removed aboriginal population was that they have a higher average income, however that was most likely due to the increased urbanization of removed individuals, which led to greater access to welfare payments than the indigenous people living in their remote communities.
However, it is correct to assume that some of the economic problems the aboriginals face is one`s own fault. The rate of which aboriginal students leave school is dramatically low, less than 39% of indigenous students continue their education for 12 years, whereas 75% of the Australian population will graduate high school. 22% of Indigenous people will go on to any form of higher education, and only 4% have held a bachelor degree or higher. Although these figures are slowly increasing, it is a much slower rate than the Australian population as a whole.
