Older and Wiser Essay
“At twenty years of age, the will reigns; at thirty the wit; at forty the judgment.” —Benjamin Franklin
Aging is one thing that each one of us experiences during our lifetime. There are two ways to define aging: by physical deterioration or by emotional and psychological maturity. Among the two, I prefer the latter definition which is about reaching full maturity in the way we think, we decide, we deal with things that really matter to us—things about happiness, fulfillment and death.
When we age, we savor the sweetness of success. But it depends upon how we do today. It depends upon our performance, our willpower, the determination we have in order to attain our wildest youthful dreams. Every year we get older. We accomplish things that lasts for one whole year and ‘reap what we sow’ in that particular year. Each year, we gain new knowledge and hopefully apply that knowledge for the years to come. Each year, we enter into a whole new and higher level of everything. Our thoughts change, our wills, our needs and wants. But the bigger dreams might have not change and we are still pursuing on those dreams. But we do have limitations.
Each year we age and aging is reaching our limit. We dream of success but we must also take into account that we don’t have “forever” to spend for it. When do we say “success”? It is when we accomplish what we should have accomplished during our younger days, else, when we get old, it is much harder to fulfill those dreams. It is when we reach our limit and finally say “I got what I wanted to have; I did what I wanted to do; I saw what I wanted to see.”
When we get older, we learn that simple things are much of a source of happiness. Bigger things do work but for me it is no longer a choice when I get old. I will be happy if I fulfilled my wildest dreams, or better yet, get more than what I wanted at first. I am happy about aging because it shows that I am a human being and I do have emotions. I always dream of being with my family and when I get old, I wanted to live with them. Thinking of nothing but going to beautiful places together with my children and grandchildren is the fulfillment of my lifetime conquest. And, just like what I’ve said, fulfillment means happiness. I won’t be able to achieve that dream until I get old. It is the only time that I get to see my grandchildren and be with them.
When we are old enough, we face the greatest challenge we ever imagine: death. Maybe not all of us wanted to die but no one can avoid it. It’s a natural phenomenon. It shows that everything has an end. Not all of the times we live we experience happiness. More often than not, we experience pain and suffering. It can be physical or emotional or psychological or combination. But whatever it is, it must end.
Having aged is having experienced those pains and hardships. We experience these things while we are still living and death is the only way to end all these. It is the thing that we, younger people, are afraid of because everything, even the things that make us happy, will also end. There will be a time in our life that death is no longer an option but a necessity. Our body will gradually deteriorate and can no longer carry the normal things we do. Luckily, we are able to flee from those burdens and it is through death.
But the best thing about aging is that when we get older, comes with it is the truth that we become mature. We think more rationally and do not rush into things unlike those robust younger days. We decide based on experience and we conclude based on what we learned from the start. Success is the fulfillment of our dreams through all the hardships it brings. Those dreams are supposed to make us happy.
Old age is the time when we savor the success we extremely fancied to have from the start. I believe it is the best time of my life; the time when I will no longer have to worry about what will happen next because I already predicted it. Our chances are rare and our choices are limited. When we reach our limit, we are no longer able to live normally. But, I believe in those years I will experience the happiest moments of my life.
