PSY 400 Week 5 Learning Team Altruism in Society Campaign and Presentation

Identify a social issue, such as domestic violence, child abuse, homelessness, business ethics, or international human rights violations.

Obtain facilitator approval.

Prepare a 1,750- to 2,100-word campaign for an intervention strategy that addresses your issue. Include the following items:

Discuss the nature and history of your issue– Define and describe your issue and then provide some historical information on this topic, how it became defined, how it became a social issue, etc.

Examine the effect the issue has on society—- In what ways or how has this issue impacted society? Who has been primarily impacted. What social structures have been impacted? Is it local, societal, cultural, global? It would not be a good campaign topic if there’s no real impact on our society.

Select at least two elements of persuasion utilized in your campaign– Only include a definition of the element as it pertains to how you are using it. This section is not for description of the element in definition form. It is for sorting out what types of persuasive techniques, of the many available, would be most useful for your particular campaign and why.

Justify the use of these elements by connecting them to various motivations of altruistic behavior as identified in social exchange theory– Here we’re looking at the elements you chose to use in reference to your audience, the type of campaign you have, why this combo and how it relates to social psychology, particularly altruistic behavior within the context of social exchange theory. These can be defined in order to provide some level of context for why you’ve chosen what you have and the anticipated impact it will have on this issue. So in essence, why this type of persuasion works for this topic with this particular audience to promote altruistic behavior.

Discuss the implications of your strategy in terms of intervention and prevention– Now that you’ve established all of the above, now what? How will this campaign make an impact? What could be done for prevention strategies and programs? What could be done as intervention strategies and programs?

Prepare a 10- to 15-minute oral presentation, accompanied by 10- to 12-Microsoft® PowerPoint® slides in which you illustrate your campaign. The slide presentation is supposed to be a visual representation of your campaign, in other words how you would present your information about your topic to your audience. IE: If your team was making a presentation to the annual statewide meeting of child care providers regarding child abuse awareness, the PP would be what your team would stand in front of that audience and present to them along with what you would say. So…depending on the issue and audience your team has selected, it might be appropriate to delve into the nature and history of the issue. It might also be appropriate to discuss the impact this issue has had on society with your audience. It’s NOT likely to be appropriate to discuss the ways you are attempting to persuade the audience with them. That would be like watching a coke commercial and then the announcer saying at the end…”We know we’re attempting to make you feel hungry, thirsty, and envious of the thin beautiful people so you’ll buy our product. Please do!” Additionally, the PP should be colorful, yet toned appropriately to your topic. There should be use of pictures also appropriate to your topic. I do look at visual layout as well as animations and slide transitions. I’m not asking for it to be complicated or complex, afterall, this isn’t about your PowerPoint skills, however, it’s a useful tool and a very useful skill set to have. It is also relevant to this particular project. (If the paper is the recipe for the cake, the PowerPoint is the finished cake. It is NOT meant to be a glorified and condensed outline of your paper. It is your campaign presented to your audience.)

Submit the 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation and the campaign paper.

Format consistent with APA guidelines
