Search for Alternative Renewable Energy Resources sample essay

The use of alternative energy sources to alleviate reliance to fossil fuels and to protect the environment should be implemented. Non renewable fossil fuels including coal, natural gas and petroleum have been the traditional source of energy all over the world. Dependency of different countries in these non renewable fossil fuels and its detrimental effect to the environment has been a major point of discussion of environmental groups as well as policy makers.

According to Demirbas (2002), there are basically three energy sources categories. Energy sources can be classified as fossil fuels, renewable sources and nuclear sources. Fossil fuels are energy sources that are more likely to be depleted and can not be retrieved while renewable energy resources are those that are consistently or infinitely available.

Renewable energy sources can be derived from biomass or organic matter, geothermal or heat from the earth, solar, water and wind. Other sources of renewable energy include methanol and biomass coming from plants and animals. At present times, fossil fuels represent 80.1 % of the world’s energy supply and only 13.6 % represents the renewable sources (Goldemberg, 2007, p.8).

Due to modernization and presence of highly fuel-dependent technologies, the fossil fuel reserve is continuously depleting. Researchers theorize that the depletion of these fossil fuels may bring problems regarding its allocation and distribution since only few countries are known to have such fossil fuel reserves. Furthermore, different environmental groups are pointing out that the used of coal, petroleum and natural gas greatly contributes to the problem of global warming and climate change (Demirbas, 2002, p.231). Thus, the used of alternative sources of energy are being proposed.

Renewable Energy Sources

As mentioned above, there are different sources of renewable energy. The used of solar, geothermal, hydrothermal and wind energy have been long proposed as an answer to substitute (or if not, supplement) the non renewable fossil fuels. Although studies regarding these sources of renewable energy have been thoroughly presents and analyzed, still, it is used by only a small percentage of the world’s population.

Solar energy as the term implies, utilize the energy coming from the sun and convert this to a form which can be used to generate electricity and heat. The main concern in using this type of alternative energy is the problem of efficiently capturing and storing the sun’s energy. At night or during inclement days, there is a need to used backups like batteries, in which the source of energy was also derived from the sun.

The next known alternative energy is the energy derived from the wind. This type of energy basically makes used of triple-bladed windmills and capture the motion of the wind. The kinetic energy generated from the wind’s motion is then converted to mechanical or electrical energy. Just like the solar energy, this alternative source of energy has also a drawback. During still weather, generation of electric energy is impossible, thus it is viewed that the used of wind energy is not altogether independent.

The third alternative renewable energy source is the hydroelectric energy which can generate a substantial amount of power. Turbines are turned by water motion therefore generating electrical energy. Finding sources for hydroelectric turbines is not a problem since the earth is made up of a large body of water. However, researchers claim that this type of alternative energy source is somewhat complicated and is expensive.

Derivation of energy from biomass or animal and plant’s waste is probably the most tackled or studied at present times. Researchers and agriculturists throughout the world are continuously conducting studies and continue to search for plants with high potential in producing oil. The biofuel industry is becoming popular nowadays.

Energy generation from biomass of plants and animals are primarily for biodiesel or bioethanol production. Researchers have proposed blending of these biofuels to petroleum gas. Mixing or blending a certain percentage of these biofuels would therefore lessen the sole dependency to petroleum gas of the transportation groups. An example of plant that has a potential for biofuel is the oil palm (Keong, 2003, p.591).

The used of methanol is also viewed as a viable alternative to the diminishing fossil fuel resources. Atmospheric carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide coming from industrial exhaust are being studied to be converted to safe liquid methanol for use as fuel. It is therefore in no doubt that the country and even the world can eliminate its dependency on fossil fuels because of the presence of the above mentioned alternative renewable resources.

Environmental Impact of Using Renewable and Non-renewable Energy

Alternative renewable resources are environment friendly. Unlike fossil fuels, these resources do not emit harmful green house gases which contribute to global warming. At present times, environmental issues are being addressed due to the unwanted and detrimental effect of industrial activities (usually combustion of fossil fuels). Irregularities on the climate or what researchers refer to as the climate change is being experienced by different countries across the globe (Goldemberg, 2007, p.12). Furthermore, the emitted green house gases coming from the combustion of fossil fuels causes air pollution and acidification of the environment (usually brought by acid rain).

The issue on global warming, climate change and other environmental problems is a sensitive topic which needs thorough attention to international political activity (Demirbas, 2002, p.232). On the other hand, the used of renewable resources are far safer than their non renewable counterparts. These alternative energy sources are derived from the different elements in the earth. Upon the process of converting the energy coming from the wind, sun and water into usable form, only natural processes are involve. Thus, this type of energy derivation does not interfere with the usual processes on earth.

Conclusion

Ways to efficiently use the different sources of energy must be thoroughly discussed. Although it is true that the non renewable fossil fuels are still the best source for energy production, people should also consider its limitation and the harm that it posed to the environment. Presence of several other sources of energy must also be discussed and innovations to address the drawbacks of such alternative sources should be studied. In the modern world that we are today, developing technologies that are especially design to effectively use the alternative sources of energy is not impossible.

Improvements of the present technologies that are used to generate energies from non renewable resources should be done in order to lessen (if not eliminate) our dependency on fossil fuels. Decreasing our reliance to fossil fuels would bring lesser production of green house gases and consequently avoiding the occurrence of global warming and climate change. Actions regarding this issue should be done now because if not, what kind of world are we going to live the next generation? Think about it. It makes sense.

Drafting the Thesis Statement

It is difficult for me at first to come out with a definite thesis statement. What I did is to consolidate ideas that I would like to discuss in my paper first and then I developed a question which I think will lead me to thoroughly discuss my topic. I visited several sites in the internet which provides ideas on how to make a concise thesis statement. I looked at examples from these sites and these examples served as a guide for me to rephrase the question that I have made into a thesis statement.

In making an effective thesis statement, one should consider his very own opinion about the topic that he would like to discuss. Since the thesis statement will serve as a guide in writing the whole paper, it is necessary that the idea should be inclined with the individual’s interest in order to lessen the difficulty in finishing the paper. The thesis statement should also be (as much as possible) located in the first paragraph. Furthermore, it must also be clear and captures the attention of readers.
