| ‘Sleepers’ – Life Time Dream Essay
Sleepers are based on the contentious novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra. It is a sad and tragic narrative about four inseparable boyhood friends who were growing up in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen. Their lives were completely, drastically changed when a scam that was done to local street vendor caused grievous harm to a casual stranger in the summer of 1968. In spite of the fact that the boys started to commit slight crimes they were in general good kids considering the surrounding morality of the neighborhood. Although, for the offense they did, the boys got a severe punishment and were sentenced to spend a year in a juvenile facility, the Wilkinson Home for Boys, and were called “sleepers”, which means youthful offenders who spend time in prison. Why “Sleepers”? From one side it is a totally another lifestyle in the prison. The casual life differs from the life behind the bars, where the boys got used to not only strict discipline and tough every day regime, but precisely abusive cruel-hearted insult. For the young offenders it becomes something like a long lethargic sleep they were eager to wake up as soon as possible. Moreover hardly any “sleeper” is able to get rid of the horrible nightmare feelings. This nightmare went on in a non-stop regime, where the most disgusting and shallow scums were in power to control their lives. The bastards in whose hands law turned into a tool of cruel violence, sexual abuse and breaking the kids’ psychology, where a person had to narcotize his personality for the sake of survival. In Wilkinson the boys were left completely alone both physically and morally and did not have anybody to protect them. Their immature souls and minds were severely affected after suffering such cold-blooded torments and outrage. It was impossible to escape themselves, they could not bury their own painful remembrances, erase from their memory the moments they wanted to die because of impuissance, weakness, pain, horror, shame and humiliation._x000D_
Having watched the “Sleepers”, every spectator is supposed to think over the actions of the main characters, whether they did right or wrong. There are two key episodes in the movie where the kids breached the law. First it was a silly trick with a hot-dog cart and the second is with a murder of Sean Noks, superintendent of Wilkinson. Though in the beginning the behavior of the boys was unreasonable, just for fun, they paid an incredibly high price for their stupid naughtiness. Such deed was criticized by the society and that is why they found themselves in the prison where they were supposed to become better and improve their discipline. But on the contrary, it turned into a place of their childhood funerals. In the second part of the movie we see them as grown-ups when they altogether were put in a position of rendering their own justice. Keeping in view, that any kind of murder is disapproved and criminated in all the countries and unacceptable by every society as a crime against human being’s life, we should come to the conclusion that the movie characters committed a cruel, cold – blooded crime and did not get due penalty for the same. It may be considered as immoral action towards society. But over here we must remember why it happened, what was the reason for killing Noks ignoring the café‘s witnesses and what pushed them to making such inhuman and immoral steps. Let us recollect Kant philosophy that a person is praised or blamed for their actions based on the intentions with which they act. The actions of these fellows should be approved because they punished people whom they terribly suffered from. The boys took revenge in a way they could do it. Their motives were a burning revenge, hunger for punishment and their intention was eager for justice and due retaliation. The grown-up guys who still remained kids inside could not forget and forgive horrors, violence, sneering and brutal attitude towards them within the prison walls, their ruined childhood and shattered dreams of having normal life. Above all, they could not forget their disability to resist brutality, impossibility to fight back. Bringing Kant’s expression that the person’s motives are the major factor in determining whether that action is moral, we may conclude that despite of the entire immorality of committed, the movie’s characters cannot be blamed in dissoluteness. Their actions were navigated by a strong desire to rescue the others from the mean dregs of society they came across in their lives, though they had to appeal to bribery, lie and even murder to hit this target. There is one more justifying evidence on their behalf, the assistance of Bobby’s father during the case hearings. Having understood what had happened to these boys in Wilkinson, he could realize what a soulless unforgivable crime had been committed against these innocent unprotected children._x000D_
The morality is to punish the guilty whose fault is incomparably bigger and heavier, whose crime is a logic consequence of further wrong and illegal steps, it is a root of other crimes because evil will give birth only to the evil.
