Teaching Plan Essay
Cultural characteristics: Secondary cultural characteristic should be assessed on an individual basis, regardless of the culture. Secondary cultural characteristics such as, occupation and educational level help determine the educational style and level. Primary cultural characteristics including nationality, race, gender and religious affiliation, may affect the educational process and should be considered (Purnell, 2013) Influences of the Greek culture may affect the educational process and outcomes. Culturally, Greek people value eye contact, human warmth, and tend to be expressive in nature.
Importantly, they have a general distrust of professionals (Purnell, 2013, p.462-463). In the Greek culture, fitness is held in high regard. They believe that development of the body and mind are equally important (Dalleck, 2002). Learning domain: To meet learning objectives one through five the cognitive and affective domains will be utilized. The cognitive domain involves the development of the learner’s ability to analyze and synthesize information.
The cognitive learner responds well lectures, individualized instruction, handouts, visual education materials, and computer aided instruction. The affective domain is used to explore the value system of the client population and to address fears regarding the learned information (Bastable, et.al, 2011, p.388-390). Rationale for educational presentation: My rationale for choosing this topic is that there are 25.8 million people in the United State living with diabetes.
Diabetes remains the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure. Adults with diabetes have a 2-4 % higher risk of diabetes deaths. Sixty to seventy percent of adults with diabetes will suffer mild to severe nerve damage. Diabetes related health care costs totaled 245 billion dollars in the United States in 2012. (American Diabetes Association, 2013). Maintaining good blood glucose control has been shown to delay or prevent diabetes related complications.
Exercise lowers blood glucose levels and reduces the chances of diabetes related complications. My plan is to develop a power point presentation that demonstrates the benefits of aerobic exercise, along with the prevention and treatment of exercise induced hypoglycemia. My power point presentation will be creative and easy to understand. Learners will receive a copy of my presentation, to use as a reference. All presented information, will come from evidence based literature.
Goal: To provide Greek patients diagnosed with diabetes, the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions regarding the use of exercise to lower their blood glucose levels and reduce their risk of diabetes related complications.
Goal of teaching/learning experience (HP 2020 goal statement):
“Increase the proportion of diabetic patients with an A1C value less than 7 %” (Healthy People 2020, 2013).
Group centered behavioral objectives –(minimum of two):
1.By the end of this session participants will state four health benefits of aerobic exercise
2. By the end of this session participants will identify three symptoms of hypoglycemia
3. Given a list of foods the participants will identify three foods that can be used to treat hypoglycemia
4. By the end of this session participants will state one fear regarding hypoglycemia
5. By the end of this session participants will verbalize that good blood glucose control reduces the risk of complications Cultural Characteristics primary or secondary; Specific Considerations to meet the learning needs of the client group.
1.The client group is composed of middle aged Greek adults
2. The client group is a low socioeconomic group
3. The client group values eye contact, expressiveness, and human warmth (Purnell, 2013).
4. The client group views development of the body and mind .as equally important (Purnell, 2013).

Thinking domain which addresses the learners attainment of information, ability to analyze, and synthesize that information (Bastable, 2011,p. 388-389)
Involves investigating the value system of the Greek culture(Bastable, 2011,p. 393) .
5 Types of aerobic exercise.

Duration and frequency of exercise needed to improve blood glucose levels
Simulates learning in the cognitive domain
Incorporates Greek value system into exercise Facilitates commitment.
8 minutesPower point presentation
After viewing power point presentation, lecture, group discussion, and handouts the clients will state four health benefits of aerobic exercise.
Affective learning is not easily observed. Therefore, the Lickert scale will be utilized to assess attitudes toward learned information (Bastable, 2011,p. 394)
Thinking domain which addresses the learners attainment of information, ability to analyze, and synthesize information (Bastable, 2011,p. 388-389)
The learner’s feelings will be stirred up by the acquisition of new information. (Bastable, 2011,p. 394)
Defining exercise induced hypoglycemia
10 Symptoms of hypoglycemia
3 snacks to prevent exercise induced hypoglycemia
3 Fears of hypoglycemia
Simulates learning in the cognitive domain
Facilitates discussion regarding the learner’s feelings regarding hypoglycemia.
Facilitates commitment to carry out learned material

Small box of raisins
Computer aided instruction:
Enhances learning in the cognitive domain (Bastable, 2011, p. 389).
Visual aids: valuable for supplementing the teaching methods and mastering content. (Bastable, 2011,p. 389)
After clients complete the lecture, participate in group discussions, view handouts and power point presentation, they will identify three symptoms of hypoglycemia
After clients completes lecture, participate in group discussion, views handouts and power point presentation, and participate in discussion regarding visual aids they will identify three foods they have in their home to treat hypoglycemia
After clients completes lecture, participate in group discussions, views handouts and power point, presentation, and participates in discussion regarding visual aids, they will express one fear regarding hypoglycemia
