The Benefits of Working While in School sample essay
In a recent survey by Universum, an employer-branding firm that regularly conducts surveys on companies, researchers asked employers which personal qualities they seek most in potential employees. Three of the most desirable traits were professionalism, high energy levels, and confidence. Many college graduates are finding themselves lost in the real world when they are repeatedly turned down for positions for which they were academically qualified. Although these young adults may hold a degree in their desired field, they are severely under qualified for the positions because they lack the qualities that employers are searching for-qualities that candidates can obtain by having experience in the form of a part-time job. Professionalism, high energy levels, and confidence are skills that a part time job while in school will surely teach prospective employees.
First impressions are everything, especially when you are meeting a potential employer for the first time in the form of an interview. Lacking knowledge of proper interview etiquette such as dress, language, and overall appearance can severely hinder your chances of securing the position in which you are interested. Acting with proper etiquette such as a firm handshake and a straight stature can instantly send a signal to the employer that you are capable of handling yourself in a professional manner. A part-time position at a local restaurant may require you to dress in a professional manner. A neat, tucked-in shirt with slacks is a standard in all Outback Steakhouse locations around the country. Looking your best at an interview is the first step in landing that dream job in the business firm you have worked so hard for, and you could learn to look your best by simply working in a setting that has a more formal dress code.
In addition to looking your best at an interview, it is also important to feel your best, and let the employer know it. Waking up at the last minute and showing up to the interview with bags under your eyes and crust in your corneas is no way to impress the boss. It is important to show the employer that you are energetic and excited to have the opportunity to work for the firm. I once worked as a swim instructor for the athletic facility by my home, and being energetic and ready to take on the day was a must. The children could always tell when I was not prepared for the lesson, and they made sure to tell me so loudly and clearly, especially when the parents were watching. By being thoroughly prepared for the interview and well-rested the night before, you are showing the employer that you deserve this opportunity and you are ready for it.
People do not just say, “confidence is key” for no good reason. A candidate with confidence is a candidate that gets hired. You may look your best and be beaming with excitement, but if you have any doubt in your mind that you are not qualified for the position, chances are you are right and the employer knows that too. Confidence is often found hand-in-hand with experience. The more job interviews you have had, the less nervous you become. The more times you have had to give a speech, the easier it gets (and the less sweaty your hands get, too). My first interview experience was a nightmare, with unsightly armpit stains on my white shirt and my words stumbling out of my mouth. At my most recent interview, I was cool, calm, and collected, because I knew from prior unsuccessful interviews that not many employers want to hire a potential employee who is not well prepared.
Arriving at an interview with your head held high and your mind at ease would surely make you stand out against the other candidates in the room who may be at an interview for the first time. While attending college and challenging yourself with the goal of a degree may be new and overwhelming, it is important to make sure you are a well-rounded and prepared candidate for the interviews you aim to have post-graduation. Being professional, energetic, and confident will set you apart from the competition in any interview and make degree you earned in college worthwhile. While college may prepare you for the job market, nothing will prepare you better than experience for being the essential employee companies are seeking.
