The Bracelet: An Eternal Jewelry Piece, a Vessel of Symbols sample essay

Bracelets have existed since the ancient era. Many suspected that it was during ancient Rome that bracelets proliferated (Matsen, Jewelry-Paideia webpage). Bracelets are one of the oldest jewelry pieces every created from metals before an array of variations have sprung up throughout its history. It became one of the timeless jewelry pieces ever made, as it continues to exist to this date.

The bracelet that will be discussed is a Celtic copper love knot. It will be discussed through the general and obvious things first before diving into its deeper essence; after all, every symbol contains at least a single hidden meaning. Love is actually one of the prolific themes when it comes to crafting or creating art. It could mean an array of things upon which the viewers may describe differently. In this bracelet, the complexity of love can be best described.

The bracelet’s structure is thick and, obviously, made of copper. It has an open end—well, a gap between the two ends of the bracelet. That open end (or cuff) enables the bearer to wear it by slipping her—the bracelet is not for guys, well maybe—wrist through that gap. It has a Celtic design that seems complex, interwoven lines from end to end.

The design obviously contains a hidden message, which will be discussed later on the paper. By the name of the bracelet, that complicated artwork may be related to the theme of love. Take note that the bracelet may not be made out of pure copper. It could be possible that the bracelet is mixed with other abundant metals; only a huge proportion of it is copper, which is good. The artwork is of Celtic descent and such designs are common in other kinds of jewelry and other things that this design can be applied to.

The artwork is made of interwoven lines, although at the middle part, they do not connect to each other. It seems that it is two identical designs one from each side, separated by a thin rift in the middle. It has a semi-repetitive design combined with an interwoven design as if to form a battle of sorts. The design also has two separate designs—if one would view it, the designs may look like a flower or something similar to it. However, these are still two different designs from two sides of the bracelet. It is a simple copper bracelet, with no real additives on its exterior. It may be compared to a low relief sculpture—although in carved from copper.

The bracelet’s semi-repetitive design could only depict eternalness or timelessness of the bracelet’s theme which is obviously, love. The interwoven design could only mean that two opposites have intertwined, as if to create an imagery of their unity; it is like the battle of two opposites. Combining the two would bring about the structure of love wherein two identical souls are trapped on two opposite sides, away from each other. Then they end up meeting in the middle, face to face once again.

The complexity of the design symbolizes the complexity of their relationship or the obstacles that a couple must face in order for what they have built, to last. This may be the artist’s or craftsman’s intended message, as if he or she had experienced such in her past life—although, it may differ from what the Celts would have to say about the design. Finally, the two flower-like designs that seem to face each other could only signify the two soul’s love for each other. It may be that through this bracelet, they are tied to each other through the powers of love.

Almost anyone can relate to the design’s theme of love—or at least how one should see the design from his or her perspective. Everyone, including myself, would desire to experience genuine (unconditional) love, now or at least sometime in the nearest future. The copper bracelet is a timeless piece of jewelry as it existed since its creation during the ancient times. Even if it did experience all kinds of changes, the bracelet is still a vessel of symbols.
