The Chartered Institute Of Personnel and Development Essay
(1.1) When researching factors that contribute to the educational process I found this to be made up of 4 categories, the learner, the teacher, the subject matter and the instruction method. Of these 4 I focused on two Individual and 2 environmental factors.
Individual – Motivation
Of all of the factors that can affect how people learn I believe that motivation is one of the most important. “Motivation is something that energises, directs, and sustains behaviour; it gets students moving, points them in a particular direction, and keeps them going” J.E. Ormrod . (2010). How Motivation Affects Learning and Behavior . Available: http://www.education.com/reference/article/motivation-affects-learning-behavior/ Last accessed 14th Oct 2013. Someone who is motivated to learn a particular task or bit of information generally succeeds, even if they have to work long and hard to do so. Learning generally breaks down as the level of interest declines.
Individual – Attention Spans
Attention spans vary among both children and adults. Some people simply prefer to be on the go and have difficulty completing a lesson or task for any length of time. Since the most popular method of teaching requires students to listen and read, often while sitting still, students who have a short attention span might have difficulty learning.
Enviromental – Distractions
Distraction is the divided attention of an individual or group from the chosen object of attention onto the source of distraction. Students learn far quicker when there is a lack of interruption. This many include people moving around, talking, and equipment not working. Students distracted during learning take less in, leading to shortened attention spans and topics being covered multiple times. According to Gloria Mark, a leader in interruption science, “The average knowledge worker switches tasks every three minutes, and, once distracted, a worker takes nearly a half-hour to resume the original task.” Distraction on Freebase. Enviromental – Climate or Atmospheric Conditions
For a limited time, humidity and high temperature can be tolerated but prolonged humidity and high temperature become unbearable. They decrease mental efficiency and make students tired and lethargic. I recent study in Westview High School, Portland, Oregon shows what happens when students are asked to complete tests under different room temperatures leading to lack of motivation and attention spans thus including both environmental and individual factors at the same time. I wanted the training to be both interesting and also something that could be used during this course both for myself and for students that I delivered the course to.
(2.1) The resources that I had available were whiteboards, interactive screen, computers. I choose to include both a PowerPoint presentation with handouts for less tech minded people and quizzes to keep pupils concentration.
Throughout the learning process I plan to put stages in place to make sure students understand what I am teaching. I plan to use quick fire questions to gain knowledge whilst using the quiz and You Tube video to give a greater understanding.
(2.2) As with all training sessions it will be structured in a way that starts with aims and objectives and reverts to them at the end to the course. At all stages students will be encouraged to ask questions.
