The first poem & satire sample essay

The first poem is obviously a satire with a very disillusioned and cynical point of view towards the world. Philosophically speaking one feels a little bit beaten up at the end of the poem that is so full of disappointment and an immense sense of abandonment. The person within the grave is happy initially to feel the presence of another being near her grave and thinks it is one of her beloved ones but as it ironically turns out, it is just her dog and he did not mean to pay her a visit but was just burying a bone.

The poem combines between a feeling of bitter humor and a sense of disappointment in the world and life as a whole. It made me wonder, after I finished it, whether there is any point in life if your existence seems like it had never taken place after your departure. Put it that way life sounds hollow and meaningless and whatever we do, through our relationships or family, loses its significance once we aren’t there anymore.

Death seems to be the only fact we have in this bizarre universe and it is therefore very natural that we would wonder what would follow after it, both for us individually as well as for those we leave behind. Reflecting on how they would move on and how we would become with time mere memories is not a cheerful act since it seems to make life and the relationships we work so hard for pointless. This is however the farsighted beyond death process of thinking.

Any rational person knows that moving on is part of our nature as humans to survive but we cannot but help feel the selfish desire of leaving an impact, something that would make this seemingly devoid of any meaning existence more worthy of a fight. The poem is one that would touch any person since it obviously deals with a universal dilemma anybody can identify and sympathize with. It is a very good example of how cleverly dark humor can be included within a writing to produce the effects of a cynical nihilist attitude towards the world. The main message to me is how death reverses everything.

It does not mean her loved ones have stopped loving her but the fact is that we fear death since everybody knows there is no escape from it. As people we fear the unknown but we would not be able to live life fully if we did not accept it as part of our destiny. The only way to do that is take into consideration that change is part of our journey an that the day of parting is unavoidable but the meaninglessness would be in not living life to the fullest or loving those in your life without holding back while keeping in mind that there might not be a tomorrow.

You can also link this reading easily to the second poem that might sound lighter in tone and happier in meaning but once reread again one cannot help but admire the many messages within the seemingly cheerful lines about the two acts most people enjoy being engaged in: drinking wine and being in love. The fact that the poet says that the only truth we have is our senses might sound romantic but connotes this idea that nothing can be trusted to last something the first poem obviously struggles with.

To put the act of wine drinking together with that of loving another person and say that those are the only things known to be a certainty before death made me think of how serious we take life when it should be as simple as that. Only through accepting death as a natural part of life can we enjoy the latter. Both poems talk about the theme of love very shortly. Love with all its complications and difficulties should not be about conflict but about enjoying it while keeping the balance as with anything else in life.

For example wine is great to drink but if a person uses too much it turns against him. When I thought of it more I realized that wine could be an allegory to all our materialistic expensive needs that can disappear the same way a bottle empties and that can be the cause of our detriment if pursued without reason. So goes the scenario with love that is not necessarily just romantic in nature. If linked to the first poem you draw the conclusion that the only way to live to the fullest is through enjoying it when you are there since life is short and the happy moments can be rare.

Whatever the poet is trying to say the message is clear, life is full of uncertainties but that is no reason not to enjoy and drink of it. Madness is the subject of our third poem that goes on to contrast between common sense ,or in other words society and culture, and madness that is no longer , once put this way, a reference to craziness but can also mean rebellion against the established order and what is considered acceptable. The question that comes up in mind then is what exactly makes a decision or an act good or bad.

Is it fair to let the majority decide for the minority and label them as crazy and insane once they disobey? And if death is an unavoidable fact of life then where is the point of living the only life you get according to rules you never established? Once you think of it that way madness is not doing what you want when you got the chance to and common sense will not matter any longer once you are in your grave and nobody even remembers to visit your grave. Then where is the point behind the sacrifice of the individuality? We move from here to our last poem. This is one that could be recited by angry children in divorce court rooms.

It is a fact that almost half the marriages end up in divorce which has made certain people oppose marriage as an unnecessary and outdated institution. The problem is however not in marriage but in the legacy history leaves on people. The way we are brought up, and knowing how complex humans are and how much love and affection they crave to grow up into emotionally stable individuals that could perform well within a relationship, means that people in general have emotional inner struggles that makes dealing with others more problematic as we tend to see things through our point of view that is in its turn colored by our experiences.

This just means that we cannot run away from our past. It follows us and affects the way we live our life and relate to others. But does that mean that we should stop the human race from continuing? I do not agree. Problems and conflict are part of life and just serve to make it more interesting and worth while. Once I link all the above into one conclusion I realize that as human beings we have the ability too make choices that could make our life ore significant and help us in parting without standing too long still by how our beloveds must be living.

Only through living life to the fullest can we let go. Otherwise what we will be left with is nostalgia to the past and an inability to appreciate life but start regarding it instead as a pointless existence. I have learned to critically analyze texts and try and read more into readings than what I might have initially perceived. Once you actually stop to think about things a thousand things start popping up in your head and it is great to realize that our brain has so much of what we experience and learn stored up waiting for it to be needed for usage.

I have learned in this class to communicate my analytical reading of English texts and relate them to my experiences which makes me realize at many times how universally small our life is as human beings. Once you put it that way you become aware of the fact that human fate is interlinked and the beauty of it is that literature seems to have collected all the stories anybody, poor or rich, can relate to.
