The Impact of Polis to Archaic Greece Essay

The Archaic period of Greek history spanned from 750 to 500 BC. During this period of time, Greece was composed of separate tribal leagues and monarchies. The polis emerged during the ninth century BC as a communal institution. The term polis is literally translated as “city-state.” In ancient Greece, the concept of polis was seen more as a “citizen-state” since it was the product of activities of the community whether the activity involves arts, politics or military where all participants are in some way equal in order for a balance between the group and the individual is achieved. This had led to the attainment of peace during Archaic Greece (Cohen, Noble and Strauss 64-65).

Peace within a city, state or country even today is extremely crucial for progress to occur. When a country such as Archaic Greece was able to achieve peace, the government and the citizens are able to concentrate on other activities without the concern of invasions or sudden raids. In the case of the Archaic Greeks, they had begun to trade with Phoenician merchants and seafarers around the area of the Orontes River. By the ninth century BC, they began to form colonies throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea (Cohen, Noble and Strauss 65).

Both the Greeks and the Romans had their share of ruling the Mediterranean. However, their influence and power spread across the Mediterranean in different ways. Rome spread hers through the sword and combat. Greece spread hers through trade and the establishment of colonies in trade (Cohen, Noble and Strauss 65). This allowed the Romans to gain much respect on Greece which they called Magna Graecia – Great Greece.
