The Responsibility Project: Ethics Game Dilemmas sample essay

Ethics are principles, which outline moral values and rules regardless if it is in a working environment or not. Each employee has a personal responsibility to uphold the rules and regulations set forth by the company. Within this essay will be discussed the Mysterious blogger and the Veiled ID and the ethical situation surrounding this scenario. Furthermore my personal response to the story, the ethical issues, decision making steps, ethical perspectives.

Ethical Issues

According to Trevino and Nelson (2007), “Managers care about ethics in part because they face the thorny problem of how to prevent and manage unethical behavior in their ranks.” Unethical behaviors, such as posting information about the safety of the company on a personal blog and ultimately hacking into someone else’s personal computer and illegally obtaining information is an example of an unethical behavior that could have severe consequences. In the Ethics game simulation of the Mysterious blogger and the veiled ID, a new program has been installed at the company intended to increase safety by requiring employees have photo identification. The new security software discovered an employee was posting company information on a blog. Unknowing to the company, further investigation was done by another employee of the company by hacking into the suspected employee’s personal e-mail and computer that discovered even more information. That information was provided to the manager, however whether or not the manager should use the illegally obtained information by another employee is the ethical issue presented.

Decision Making Steps

The decision-making steps taken to address the issues came down to moral recognition of the problem. According to Ehow.com (2012) “Ethical decision making starts with moral recognition. This requires individuals to identify that a situation involves a moral issue. Secondly, moral recognition leads decision makers to interpret or perceive situations with regard to the magnitude of consequences.” Basing actions on informed, sound, and responsible judgment is very important. One of the most important decision making step is also to remain open about the situation and not to jump to conclusions. Before all of the information is heard and presented, to take the time necessary to review everything in its entirety that will better allow the manager to make a thorough decision.

Ethical Perspectives

The ethical lenses used to make all decisions were based on the rights/responsibilities lens. As a manager of a company, it is the responsibility to hold everyone accountable for their actions. According to Gaikwad (2011) “Loyalty or faithfulness towards work builds a sense of trust amongst employees and the employer. The role of loyalty is an important one while nurturing an ethical workplace.” While in the particular scenario, Jamal Moore acted on his own to show Aaron Webb had violated the NDA. The problem is that both parties were wrong in a sense and should have been punished accordingly. Originally, the decision was to use the information provided to fire Aaron Webb for violating the NDA and simply discipline Jamal Moore for illegally obtaining the information; however in the end, the decision was changed to discipline both individuals for their actions. The simulation stated that the responses show a tendency to be a realist and acknowledge the very human frailties that everyone has.

Personal Workspace

Concepts from this simulation can easily be used in not only the workspace I currently am in but also every workspace. The simulations made you think it through rather than jumping to any conclusions and made you realize everything from an ethical standpoint. It also reinforced that decision making is not easy, but as a manager you have a very important job to do and decision making is part of that responsibility regardless of who it may affect as a result. In conclusion, issues occur in every workplace, and it is up to the manager to look at those issues in an ethical point of view rather than a personal opinion or a personal point of view. There is always a right and wrong but establishing an ethics management program is key to the success of any organization because it conveys corporate values.
