The Road Not Taken by Frost: Our choice Our Perception sample essay
The theme of “The Road Not Taken” by Frost shows that all people have choices to make in their lives. And that the choices we make are guided by our perception of the paths we have to choose from. And that we have to live with the choices we make. In the Poem the setting is a literal setting. This is described in the first line of the poem “Two Roads diverged in a yellow wood”. Frost goes on to describe each path in front of him and that he could see the same distance down both paths. “And look down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair”
At first Frost describes the second path as the less traveled”Because it was grassy and wanted wear”, but then once he took the path he describes it as being the same “And both that morning equally lay” Although Frost describes a place in the woods the reader gets the feeling that this just a symbolic setting. And that the actual setting is that of everyday choices that need to be made. Some of which will be uninformed and that the reader has to do what they believe is right or best for them. For the reader there should be several different moods that take place. The first of which is loneliness being in the woods by yourself Frost describe this as “and be one traveler, long I stood”. The reader gets the feeling of loneliness in making a decision with no help or information from friends or family. Then the mood moves into fear of regret when Frost talks about how he will most likely not come back to this path again. The reader at this point is already sensing regret. But ultimately the poem ends with Frost feeling regret with the choice that he had made, this is described towards the end of the poem by saying “I shall be telling this with a sigh”.
The title is very important in showing the roads not taken are just important as the roads that are chosen. This is symbolic in the way someone’s life could have turned out had they made different choices when given the chance. There are several literary terms used in Frost’s poem. The first being Imagery, Frost gives an image to the reader on what the situation is by saying ”Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” and “And both that morning equally lay in leave no step had trodden black.” Both of these descriptions help put the reader in the story almost making it his own. Next frost uses the road as symbolism about choices that need to be made in life.
Which show a sense of outcome for choices we make. Frost goes on to use Personification in the line “Because it was grassy and wanted wear” this is known because a Road cannot want wear. In this line “I shall be telling this with a sigh” Frost uses Onomatopoeia to describe the sound he makes later in life while talking about his decision. “The Road Not Taken” By Frost is written using ABAAB rhyme scheme. This poem has four stanzas of five lines. Frost leaves the identity of the narrator open this is done in a way that the reader can put their selves in the poem and be able to identify with the choices that need to be made.
“The Road Not taken” by Frost is a poem that can be analyzed and depicted in numerous ways. Throughout the poem no one actually knows what either of the outcomes was or could be. The reader just knows that both paths looked the same at the time of the decision. So the choice came down to personal choice and the way he viewed it. Frost shows regret at the end of the poem about his decisions even though he will never know the outcome if he would have taken the first path.
