| The Second World War Essay

According to Historians, World War II was perceived as the largest and most violent war in the history of mankind. Germany initiated War by attacking Poland with the aim gaining control over its territories. France and Britain were against Germany invasion in Poland, and they declared War on Germany as a way of stopping them from invading Poland (Adams, 2000). Total war started during the time when Hitler who was a German dictator refused to stop his invasion in Poland. That is how World War II started, and it eventually became more violent as more countries especially from Europe started to participate in War. This War led to loss of life of approximately 50 million people across the globe, and very many people were injured.

Although some developed countries participated in World War II, America was unwilling to participate in such wars since many citizens were opposed to it due to various reasons. However, in 1941 Japan invaded United States of America, and attacked its military base which was situated at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Then, Hitler declared total war on the United States of America.

There are many historical turning points as far as World War II is concerned. One of the main historical turning points is the fact that if Germany under the leadership of Hitler had defeated Britain, countries such as United States of America would obviously has lost a very valuable ally. Additionally, if Hitler had defeated Britain, Germany would have gotten an ample opportunity to focus on the USSR. This implies that Germany would become extremely powerful if it defeated Britain.

Another main historical turning point is that the Battle of Britain was perceived as one of the most vital events throughout the period of World War II. This is because the Battle of Britain proved to people across the globe that Hitler, a German dictator, was not undefeatable. Britain was able to reveal to all people the weakness of Germans during their battle. As a result, the Battle of Britain created an ample opportunity for Britain to move out of German control.

Additionally, if British, United States of America and other allied forces had failed to gain French beaches, France would obviously remain under the control of German. Moreover, if Britain was still under German control, then Germany would have been able to control Eastern Europe. As a result, Germany would have no need to fight on two fronts, but it would concentrate its forces in invading Russia.

During World War II, America and other countries experienced depression which had negative effects on their economies. Great depression is one of the most remembered historical events in the history of America. This is because it contributed to massive economic downfall in America as well as in other industrialized countries in the globe. The Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted for approximately 10 years. As a result, the economy of America destabilized, and millions of people from different sectors lost their jobs (Churchill, 1993). Additionally, Great Depression contributed to failure of businesses since many were bankrupt. However, many people thought that the main cause of Great Depression was the stock market crash. This was a misconception because there were many factors that contributed to the Great Depression. The main cause of Depression was due to unequal and unfair distribution of money/wealth in the 1920’s. This unfair distribution of wealth affected people from different social classes in the society. This unequal distribution of money made the economy unstable.

On the other hand, the performance of stock market was deteriorating than many people thought throughout this period. This was the main reason that led to massive stock market crash in the American history, as well as other nations. During the Great Depression, the stock market crash and unequal distribution of wealth contributed to economic instability. This is because prices of various products and services fluctuated into unaffordable levels. Although the effects of Great depression were more evident during the World War II, its effects were still experienced after the end of that war. In the current situation, effects of the Great depression are evident in some sectors in America.

Despite the fact that American allies were willing and ready to participate in the World War II, America wanted to stay out of that war due to a number of reasons. One of the main reasons that made America avoid participating in the World War II was because the majority of American citizens were not willing to participate in a war that had not affected them directly. Therefore, American government could not participate in that war since the majority of its population disapproved that initiative. However, the Government of United States of America opted to participate in that War after the invasion of Pearl Harbor by Japanese. After the Pearl Harbor attack, US citizens wanted revenge, and they allowed their government to participate in the without criticism (Morison, 1992).

Another major reason as to why American did not want to enter into World War II was because it had the Great Depression affected the economy of United States of America negatively, and as a result, America was not interested in joining those wars. In 1930s, United States of America was recovering from the Great Depression, and many Americans were not concerned about the struggle for survival among people across Europe. This implies that Americans were more focused on economic revival than participation in the World War II. This is because many Americans felt that participation of American in the World War I was a big mistake since it affected its economic and political stability.

Many women played a key role in the success of World War II by joining the armed forces, as well as nurse corps. They were encouraged to join these posts so that many men in the military could be sent in Wars against rivals. As a result, women leaders played an extremely vital role during the World War II, and they determined the outcome of that war. Also, women played a critical role in bringing peace that was experienced after the end of World War II.

Additionally, women were encouraged to join various occupations so as to enable the federal government to expand its operations. Additionally, some women joined the military in war with the aim of protecting United States of America from its rivals. Many women also worked in factories that were used by the American government in the production of weapons that were used by its military forces. Women were extremely valuable part of the labor force that helped in increasing the production output. Therefore, women played a highly critical role since they ensured that the country was running by occupying positions that were traditionally secured to their male counterparts.

World War II ended in 1945 after Germany forces surrendered, and after that Civil rights movements started to arise in the United States of America. These movements were stated in 1950s and ended in 1960s comprised of African Americans. African Americans were fighting to have equal rights as whites in America. Some of the rights that African Americans were fighting for include equal employment opportunity, education, as well as housing. This is because Black Americans were discriminated by white, for instance, whites had access to quality education and were favored in the process of recruitment at all levels.

They were also demanding equal rights to access public facilities, their right to vote and their right against discrimination. This civil right movement endeavored to force the government to implement laws that would protect the rights of African American citizens. Additionally, this movement contributed to the reemergence of the judiciary which comprised of Supreme Court. This court served as a protector of liberties and rights against majority power. As it was predicted Martin Luther King Jr, among other leaders, civil rights movement did not only benefit Black Americans, but it also benefitted women as well as people with disabilities. This movement enabled African Americans to gain equal rights as whites in America, and as a result, they were able to participate in various public activities.

Ways in which Vietnam War brought political awareness to a new generation of young Americans

Vietnam War was one of the toughest and longest war that United States of America ever fought, and this war was resulted to sorrow and suffering in both America and Vietnam. Vietnam War had adverse effects on both America and Vietnam. This war divided a nation into the extent that citizens fought against their federal government; fathers and sons fought each other, and many people went to war. On the other hand, many people protested against Vietnam War and there were rebels. During this war, many people lost their lives and this negatively affected the lives of their families and friends. This war created awareness on the need of unity and solidarity in new generation of young Americans and no one want to see United States of America divided again.

Additionally, Vietnam War created awareness on a new generation on global strategy, the need for military preparedness. Additionally, this war created awareness on the need to have combined operations in war against fascism. This is because Vietnam War contributed to loss of many people’s lives than if America had opted for combined operations in Vietnam.

In 1960s, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the “Great Society”, and under that name, economic and social legislation was approved by the government. This legislation was aimed at improving the lives of the poor people and disadvantaged in the society. During that period, American government established educational assistance programs, Medicare and housing and urban development department. After the approval of that legislation, the federal government initiated war on poverty. This is a war that American government is yet to win; this implies that the war on poverty that was initiated by the President Lyndon B. Johnson is still going on under the current government.

Additionally, President Lyndon Johnson played a key role in the enactment of civil rights laws. This was under Civil Rights Act which was passed in 1964, and this law prohibited racial discrimination in public places. This ensured that African Americans were not discriminated by whites in America. This Act has consistently played a key role in the current America because the rights of African Americans are respected.
