Tidal Energy Generation sample essay
The tide and ocean currents produce energy through the movements of water on its surfaces. By capturing this energy, energy called tidal energy and sometimes referred to as tidal power was introduced. This energy can be extracted in the form of kinetic energy and potential energy. From the moving waters of rivers, tides and open ocean currents make up the kinetic energy and through the presence of high and low tides, and its difference in height basis forms the potential energy (Bellis, 2007). The gravitational pull of the moon and of the sun on the earth’s water causes these height differences of water, the high and the low tide, which often happens two times a day. In addition to these lunar and solar pulls, the rotation of the earth also contributes in the construction of tides.
Since the 11th Century, Britain and France had utilized this tidal power to mill the grains they harvested (Bellis, 2007). They had learned to transform this tidal power from the moving water into a new form, the tidal energy and also had used this to generate another type of energy in the form of electricity. The main concept of generating electricity from tidal power is by putting up a dam across the opening to a tidal basin.
Then this dam allows the passage of the tide through a sluice opening, and letting the tide to flow into the basin. After capturing sufficient amount of water level, the opening is then closed. The waterwheels or technologies like that of a traditional hydropower system, that uses turbines are used as the sea level goes down. These letting go of the water causes this turbines to move, thus creating electricity.
tidal power is considered as a renewable energy, tides are continuously flowing
tidal power has great potential for future power and electricity generation
tidal power is predictable
tidal power is free
tidal power doesn’t produce greenhouse gases or other waste that can cause pollution
no need for fuel to run the system
Maintenance does not cost much
tidal generators that were built over bodies of water can serve as bridges and roads
the energy that can be generated is limited, about 10 hours a day of energy production where the changes in tide occurs
tidal barrages cannot be build anywhere, limited sites to build the power system
construction of the tidal power plant costs a lot
tide levels might increase due to the use of dams in the production of tidal power which can cause the shoreline to be flooded and will have an adverse effect on the species populating near the shore
water system’ sedimentation and turbidity or how clear the water is can be affected
Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of using tidal energy to generate electricity, I have come to a decision that I am against the construction of tidal power plant and of the use of tidal energy. The reason why I had came up with this idea is because there is an unknown effect this tidal energy might bring on the plants and animals in the local environment and to the ecosystem. Fishes can also be killed when they came across the blades of the turbine. Sedimentation can also happen and the sitting up of waterways. It is evident based on the history that consequences are always there when humans change the natural balance of an environment.
