I work with clients with a learning disability, within a supported housing setting. My current job role is as a ‘care assistant’. I am responsible for providing support to the service user’s, which includes: Personal care, assisting with meal preparation, assisting with medication, assisting with meal planning, and maintaining records for service delivered. I received an induction training course when I first joined the company, which provided specialised training relating to the learning disability sector. I receive regular supervision with my line manager, where I can discuss any problems, and get support.
I can also request training, and my manager can highlight areas where she thinks I would benefit from further training in. I attend regular refresher courses in training, so that I am up to date with the current standards required for my role. I treat all service users with respect and dignity, and my work practices reflect and promote equal opportunities. I have read, and understand my Company’s policies and procedures, and am aware of what to do in most circumstances, and the correct reporting/recording procedures to follow. I always work in a professional manner, and ensure all service user information is kept up to date, and confidential.

By giving preferential treatment to clients that I like more the other. Clients may have different religion to me. Have different values in sexual preference than me.

That means I must take refresher courses in things like health and safety, infection control etc. This will make me aware of any new procedures that might apply and use the current techniques when helping my clients.

Diversity refers to the unique differences in our society, between individuals and how individuals choose to live their lives. Each person is a unique individual and diversity recognises these differences, whether its differences because of race, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, background, physical appearance, family structure or disability. Pysical effects: headaches, poor appetite, a change in eating habits, sleeplessness, loss/gain of weight, deterioration of health, bruises, ulcers, lack of personal hygiene and lack of energy. Emotional effects: low self esteem, lack of confidence, feeling unwanted, insecurity, becoming withdrawn, depression/stress, anxiety, sudden change in behavior, lack of co-operation and learned helplessness. Social effects: isolation, lack of friends, becoming withdrawn, unrecognized as an individual, feel like a stranger and inability to build relationships. the intellectual effects: restricted access to education, poor performance in examinations, lack of achievements, poor job prospects, lack of skills, self-fulfilling prophecy, loss of motivation, lack of interest in anything and absence from work.
33: 1.3 Explain how inclusive practice promotes equality and supports diversity. The legislation that relates to equality, diversity and discrimination is the Equality Act 2010. The codes of practice that relate to equality, diversity, and discrimination are General Social Care Council code of practice for Social Workers, and the National Occupational Standards for Social Work. These acts and codes of practice briefly are to protect the rights of an individual.
33.2.2 Show interaction with individuals that respects their beliefs, culture, values and preferences. Sometimes it’s not easy.
