Were Sports Different in the 1920’s and 1930’s than today? sample essay

Many people wonder if sports were different 80 years ago than it is today. Well I have done some research and figured out the answer. With the research I have found I determined that sports have changed a little bit but overall each sport is basically the same. Some of examples of sports that have not changed a lot are hockey, baseball and the Olympics. Hockey’s National Hockey League got started in 1920, which is still around today. The game has changed slightly since its beginning but it is not a whole different game. Baseball hasn’t changed much and it doesn’t have to because it is just as exciting as it was when it became popular in the ’20’s and ’30’s. For the Olympics every 2 years the same magic is there today as there has always been.

The game of hockey became a professional sport way back in 1890. But in 1920 was when the National Hockey League came on to the scene. The same excitement, violence, media coverage and labor disputes were around then just as they are now. The game of hockey has been known as a game of much violence. There is not so much violence in the game today but still is known for being a violent game. In fact, in the 1920’s when players got in a fight, they would not drop their gloves and have a fist fight, they would wack each other with their sticks and that was accepted. The media coverage was just as crazy as it is today. Every where you went you would see something about hockey. Instead of families and friends watching the game on a TV like today, families and friends in the ’20’s and ’30’s would listen to it on the radio. Labor disputes are not only a modern thing, they even happened back in the ’20’s. In 1925 a labor dispute between the players and ownership cost the city of Hamilton their beloved Tigers.

More games were added to the schedule and the players were not getting any extra money for the extra games. So the players went on strike during the playoffs. As a result the NHL suspended the club and the next year the club was sold to a man who brought the team to New York and named them the Americans who are known now as the Rangers. Similar situations happen today when players will sit out because they want to be traded to another team or want to make more money. Hockey is a sport that Canada can call their own before 1920 and still can today. Sure there have been minor changes but the basis of the game is still there and always has been and will be the number 1 sport in Canada.

Babe, Rose and Sammy all ran on a dirt diamond with bases 90 feet away from each other. Rocket Roger and Rapid Robert pitched the ball 60 feet 6 inches away from home plate. Yogi Berea and Mike Piazza both stood behind a 5 sided home plate. Blackie and A Rod stood 45 feet between 2nd and 3rd base. All these measures are the same even though these players’ careers stretched from 1907-today. The measures of the playing field have never changed. Baseball along with hockey were the two most talked about sports in Canada in the 1920’s. So the media was all over the place. In those days unless you went to the game you would have to listen to it on the radio or read about it the next day in the newspaper.

Today the media coverage is a lot just like it was 80 years ago. Ownership then was just like today. To own a team you had to be a very wealthy person. Also most owners were more interested in making money than putting a winning product on the field. That is also like today with only few exceptions. Although baseball originated in the United States, Canada did and still has a very strong fan base for baseball. Not many changes have been made in the game and is still loved as much as it always has.

Every 2 years there is excitement of the competition between countries from all over the world in the Olympics. No matter if it is the winter or summer games people gather around and talk about the games. It is especially exciting in Canada because of all the different immigrants rooting for their home country gave the whole thing an even bigger sense of excitement. The Olympics had and still have a huge impact on society. Whenever the Olympics are on everyone knows it even if they are not a sports fan. The Olympics have a way of bringing people together and will make people happy. There are a lot of friendly rivalries amongst different types of Canadians and that’s what makes the Olympics so great and it has done that in the ’20’s, ’30’s and has continued on to today.

Another example of how the Olympics are the same then as it is now is in every event there is a gold, silver and bronze medal winner. Never have these medals changed and never will they be changed. Which every country hosts the games will receive a huge boost in their economy as people come from all over the world to watch their home country compete and have to pay for expenses like food and hotels. This is the same today. The Olympics have always had a positive impact on society and this will continue to happen.

In conclusion I have to say that sports have not changed very much since 1920. In hockey the game has not changed and it doesn’t need to because it is so popular. In baseball Barry Bonds smacked just as many home runs as Roger Marris did with the same shaped bat and there is over 100 years of baseball history and if you look back you will see it is almost the same today. In the Olympics, Gold, Silver, Bronze. Those will always be the 3 medals won. Nothing will change that. So overall sports have not changed much between the years 1920 and 2004 and I believe I have proved that in the above information.
