Albert Einstein is the most renowned scientist of the 20th century. His contribution to Physics has brought about a major change in our perception of the physical world. (adherent. com) Albert Einstein’s Life Albert Einstein was born on March 15th, 1879 in Ulm, Wurttemberg, Germany. He was born to a Jewish couple Hermann Einstein.

Hermann and Pauline Einstein also gave birth to a daughter named Maria and Einstein was very attached to his sister. (Venkatraman. 1993) Hermann Einstein was a businessman by profession, few years after the birth of Albert; Hermann moved his family to Munich with an intention to do business with his brother Jacob an engineer. At age of six Albert entered the public school which is referred to as Volksschule in German. In 1888 Albert Einstein left the Volksschule to join the luitpold Gymnasium which is an equivalent of a High School.

(Venkataraman. 1993) Albert’s uncle Jacob and Max Talmud a family friend of Einstein’s were responsible for piquing Albert’s interest in Science. Jacob would often try to amuse young Albert by posing mathematical problems for him and Albert enjoyed contemplating over these problems. Max Talmud supplied Albert with books on Science. Max and Albert also discussed philosophies of science with each other. (Venkatraman. 1993) Thus from a very young age Albert Einstein had been deeply interested in Science and Mathematics.

At an early age of six young Albert was introduced to the world of music by his mother Pauline who was a pianist. His lessons in violin continued till he reached an age of thirteen. Einstein enjoyed music and the violin remained his favorite instrument through his life. Einstein once said “I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in the form of music”. (Lucidcafe Library) Hermann Einstein’s business in Munich was initially successful but later began to falter, so he was forced to move his factory to Milan in Italy.

While the family moved to Italy Albert was left at Munich so that he could complete his course at the Gymnasium. However Einstein felt lonely and miserable without his family so he acquired a medical certificate from a doctor, quit the Gymnasium and left for Italy. At their family home in Milan, Albert spent his time studying for the entrance test of the Eidgenossisehe Technische Hochschule a Polytechnic in Zurich, Switzerland. He managed to clear the entrance test on the second attempt and studied at the Polytechnic from 1896 to 1900.

Upon graduation he took up a job as a third class technical expert at a patent office in Berne, Switzerland. His job allowed him plenty of spare time which he utilized for his private research he published many papers in the German journal Annalander Physik. In 1905 he published three highly acclaimed papers; a paper on Brownian Motion, paper on photo electric effect and a third paper on the theory of relativity. He received a Noble prize for his paper on Photoelectric effect. Einstein got married at about the same time he published his papers.

In 1907 Einste3in received a doctorate degree form University of Zurich following which he quit his job at the patent office in order to enter the world of Academics. (Venkatarman. 1993) Albert Einstein’s life in Europe Einstein began his academic career as a staff member in Zurich University, later he moved to Prague, Czechoslovakia to take a up a prestigious appointment at Karl-Ferdinand University, In 1912 he returned to Zurich to teach at Polytechnic of which he was once a student, his stay in Zurich was brief and he then moved to Berlin, Germany.

Where took up the post of professor of physics. In 1932 Einstein left for American thereby putting an end to his life in Europe, he did this in order to escape the anti Jew feelings that persisted in Germany and in other parts of Europe. Einstein’s Scientific Trips In pursuit of his Academic career Einstein traveled widely. He published his renowned papers during his stay at Berne where he worked for the patent office. He traveled to Zurich, Prague and Berlin where he worked as a Professor at various Universities.

In 1932 Einstein immigrated to America where initially he served at the California Institute of technology for a brief period, later he moved to Princeton, New Jersey where he worked at the Institute of Advanced Studies. Einstein lived in Princeton for the rest of his life. Why Einstein Emigrated from Germany? Einstein belonged to the Jewish faith and during the period of 1930’s conditions prevailing in Germany were not favorable to Jews. Adolf Hitler was openly campaigning against Jews and people were advised not to believe anything discovered by Jewish scientist.

Many Jews were fleeing the country in fear of execution. Since Einstein had by that time established himself as a famous celebrity scientist, he was particularly under observation by the Nazi government. In view of the prevailing unfavorable circumstances Einstein decided to leave Germany. (Venkataraman. 1993) After leaving Germany Einstein discovered the prudence of his decision to flee from his homeland. Einstein learnt from press reports that his home in Berlin had been sacked by Adolf Hitler on the allegation that he had hidden there a vast reserve of arms. (The New York Times. April 19, 1955)

Einstein’s Achievements Einstein has made much valuable contribution to Physics. His theory on Brownian Motion won high acclaim since it explained many aspects of the molecule. His paper on photoelectric effect won noble prize. Einstein is remembered for his Special Theory Of Relativity and its successor The General Theory of Relativity. These theories presented some ground breaking ideas which has dramatically altered our understanding of physical realities. Einstein is known for a very popular equation E = mc2, with this equation Einstein proved the convertibility of mass into energy and vice versa.

Einstein originated radical ideas such as the concept of gravity effecting light and space time, these ideas have become core ingredients of modern science fiction. Einstein initiated the research of Unified Field Theory which seeks to explain effect of all the forces on matter and space; however he was unable to complete this work. Einstein’s Death In 1948 Einstein was diagnosed with aneurysm for which he underwent a surgery however he suffered a relapse and was hospitalized in December of 1954, he died on April 18th 1955.Einstein had continued his research of the Unified Theory of Relativity till the very last day of his death.
