Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing: The People behind the Internet’s Bad Impression sample essay

What does the internet implies to us today? In a simple survey, I learned that most of them have given a bad impression on this technology. When asked why, they all commented differently but came up with one conclusion—that the internet has contributed a lot to the deterioration of humankind’s moral values. However, looking on a different perspective regarding this issue, I’ve seen a different thing from most of them. I do believe this technology has contributed well for the wellness of most people today, whether at school, work or home.

And from that firm belief, I have had the research that proves well that behind this technology are those thousand others who benefited from the internet yet have given it a bad impression to other users. J.K. Flor, a regular internet user, said in an article, “The internet couldn’t exist today without the diligent hands and brilliant minds of those who created this technology. Therefore, it is also good to understand that, without those undisciplined and abusive internet users, the internet wouldn’t have gained its bad impression nowadays.”

The internet is indeed a wonderful and amazing addition in our lives which is known as a global meeting place where people from all parts of the world come together. It is a service available on the computer, through which everything under the sun is now in the fingertips of anyone who has access to it. It also provides opportunities galore which can be used for variety of things such as e-mailing, accessing information, online shopping, downloading, and chatting.

So how can these things give us the advantage? Well, e-mail for one is already a great help to connect two peoples apart. With it, anyone can send and receive instant electronic messages. The messages are delivered instantly to people anywhere in the world, unlike the traditional mail that takes a lot of time. The internet also has the virtual treasure trove of information. Any kind of information on any topic under the sun is available by just few clicks through the search engines in the internet that helps a person to find data on any subject that one needs. Aside from that, along with getting information in the internet, you can also do shop online. There are many online stores and sites that can be used to look for product as well as buy them using your credit card.

With it, you do not have to leave your house for you can simply do all your shopping from the convenience of your home. Aside from that, you can also enjoy the free downloading of innumerable games, music, videos, movies and a host of other entertainment software in the internet. Perhaps, it is one of the most happening and fun things to do via internet. So what more? Consider staying in touch with old friends, the access of meeting new people and the chances of meeting new friends, these things are just a great thing that online chatting could offer. There are hundreds of private and public chat rooms where you can choose.

With all those benefits that we can have through the internet, there are however cons and dangers relating to the use of it that we can certainly not deny. First, through using the internet, your personal information such as your name, address, phone number, etc. can be accessed by other people. If you use a credit card to shop online, then your credit card information can also be stolen which could be akin to giving someone a blank check.

Second, pornography is a serious issue concerning the internet, especially when it comes to young children. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the internet that can easily be found and can be detriment to letting the children use the internet. Third, spamming has been a common problem today regarding internet since these sent unsolicited e-mails in bulk serves no purpose at all and just unnecessarily clogs up the entire system.

Given all those advantages and disadvantages cited above, one may ask “is the internet really good or bad?” The answer may not be obvious but sure it is simple. The internet itself is not bad. Rather, it’s the people behind all those illegal activities that are giving it a bad impression to others.

Toni Garvey, the chief librarian of Central Phoenix Library, appreciates a lot the technology that links together nearly half a billion of people in the World Wide Web. As a librarian, he has also seen the great help it offered the students in accessing educational resources faster. However, one day, he spotted three separate men and a group of giggling girls viewing pornographic material on the library’s terminals. With that instance she was able to conclude how some people nowadays have abused this technology. Garvey complained, “For me, this has been one of the challenging issues of my career. The internet is offering good things for the people but it’s just us who want to do the right thing yet don’t know what the right thing is.”

It has been said that the very reason that technologies are created is that people wanted an easier life. Therefore, it is clear that the purpose set before the making of the internet is simply to help us make things faster and efficient. However, due to some people’s immaturity, selfishness, and scandalous attitudes, this technology has been given the impression of being an evil machine of today’s fast-paced world. Take for example the chat rooms. Chat rooms are “areas” on the internet where users can have live, two way conversations via text messages. With this, students in the United States might discuss social issues with fellow students in Spain, England, or elsewhere with their teacher’s supervision.

They may even chat about their class projects with a qualified engineer, chemist, or another expert. Nevertheless, there are many people who visit chat rooms who are not there to discuss academic subjects but only to disrupt others with corrupting ideas. Consider the experience of a young man named Cody. He was chatting with other friends online regarding their class assignments when suddenly a girl invited him into a private chat area. She then asked him a sexually suggestive question. The good thing is that Cody had the self control and awareness to terminate the conversation immediately and proceed with his main purpose of seeking academic help with his classmates. (Awake!, September 22, 2005). With this example, it is clearly viewed that the consequences the internet brings simply depends on how a person responses to those “undisciplined” people.

If one chooses to ride on with internet dating, then he/she may be putting his/herself into a serious danger—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. (Awake!, April 22, 2005). Just as the Bible says, “The love of money is the root of evil” explains that it is not the money itself is evil but it’s the man’s craving for it. So same with the internet, it is not therefore the internet itself that is hurting the people but rather those who are behind it. Those people who loves mischievous acts. Those people who have nothing good to do than make fun of others. Those were the culprit behind all these.

According a news report recently, there are adult sexual predators who pretend to be youths as they prowl the internet seeking to prey young ones. And a study shows that “one-in-five kids who uses internet has been solicited for sex.”

One newspaper also stated that 1 person in 10 who gave their bank account information for buying items were stolen of their savings. Some young people have found, to their surprise that the “youth” with whom they shared a budding romance over the internet was actually an adult prison inmate. These vile people first “groom” a prospective victim, building trust through friendly on-line chat. In time, though, they seek to meet in person in order to carry out their perverted desires. No doubt, those people best suits the title “wolves in sheep’s clothing” (Awake!, May 22, 2005).

Of course, many are also able to make balanced use of the internet. Communication it offers has been a really great help nowadays not just in making contacts with friends but also in running their businesses. Sadly, some people can’t just be truly honest in some matters that they took advantage of this technology in a way hurting for other people who suppose to seek help out of its uses. “How could this happen?” a researcher asked to motivate awareness on the real issue. It is through the “Triple-A Engine”—access, affordability, and anonymity that are suppose to be a real favor for the internet users. But to some point, abusive users simply used this engine to start their self-gaining acts.

Recent surveys reveal that because of people’s wrong way of using this technology such as internet-dating or internet-romance has led to the trend of internet-related divorces. In most of these tragedies, extramarital relationship has dramatically destroyed mutual trust among couples and eventually ripped their marriage apart. (J.P. Schneider, 2000)

The challenges and threats post by the people behind the internet leaves us no option but to strengthen our self-discipline; to stress in our educational approach and behavior to the essential greatness of being human; to encourage honesty in everything we do; to expose open discussion, especially about issues related to sexuality and adulthood, in the family and class rooms; and to raise a generation that seeks marriage partners who are refined and are truly disciplined in all aspects. Parents and teachers therefore are advised to take these challenges to educate their children and students in using the internet in a way that benefits them and the people on the other side who seeks to be helped and deserves respect.

To those who say that internet is the root of all those cyber evil today, think again. You might have forgotten that internet is made especially to give you Communication Bridge, shopping ease, educational support, business assistance, and convenient leisure (music, movie, games, etc.). So, the next time around when something in the internet gives you a bad impression about it, remind yourself that there are certainly persons behind all those.

They are those whom we mentioned above as “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. Take heed. Beware. Not of this heavenly machine but of those horny engine starters. Do not allow them to corrupt your mind, not even your money nor your healthy pleasure or even your loved ones’ happiness, your great moral and clean conscience and above all your healthy self-image inside and out.
